Tap Water in Romania

When the water quality is poor, it is often due to different forms of pollution including chemicals. For example, this past January, Romania’s Health Ministry said the tap water in Bucharest was unsafe to drink due to high levels of ammonia found in the Arges river (Bucharest’s main water source).

Is this need being met? How?:

Although the tap water in Romania isn’t always drinkable, Romanians generally have easy access to drinkable water in other forms. For example, bottled water is extremely cheap here. Most 5 liter jugs of water cost between 6 and 8 lei ($1.50 - $2). The Romanian government has also received funding from the European Union to begin initiatives to make tap water cleaner and safer to drink. Thus, although there is still work to be done, the government is making an effort to make Romania’s tap water cleaner and safer to drink.
