The beginning of March is a special time in Romania. March 1st marks a holiday called Mărțișor, which celebrates the beginning of spring. On this day, boys traditionally give girls snowdrop flowers and small trinkets, also called mărțișor (plural mărțișoare), with red and white ribbon or thread attached to them. At the end of the month, the girls pin their mărțișoare on a tree, or plant them outside in the ground next to flowers in order to bring them good fortune for the new year. In addition, March 8th is when Romanians celebrate Mother's Day.
