Most celebration meals are also centered around a seafood dish, whether it’s fish or crabs or shellfish. Japan also has one of the largest fish markets in the world. Chefs in Japan are highly skilled in working with fish because of its role in nearly all dishes.

Rice has also remained a staple food in the Japanese diet. Rice is one of the few grains that can grow in some of Japan’s more mountainous areas and provides an important source of nutrients. Despite the introduction of breads and other foods, most Japanese people will still have at least one meal with rice every day.
