The main language spoken in India is Hindi, with over 500 million speakers of the language. Surprisingly, the second most spoken language in India is English, with around 125 million speakers. This is partly due to India's history of being a British colony, but also because English is a worldwide language that is commonly used today for conducting business and international affairs. Even with Hindi and English as the most common languages, it is important to remember that there are over 50 other languages in India that each have over 1 million speakers. That is a lot of different languages for one country!
Instead of dollars, people here use rupees. One U.S. dollar is equal to about 72 rupees. This means that if you have 10 dollars, you can trade your dollars in for 720 rupees. That is a lot of rupees for just 10 dollars!
A bottle of water here usually costs anywhere from 20 to 35 rupees. If you were in America, that would be the same as paying between 28 to 48 cents - less than a dollar!
