What main languages are spoken here?:

The main language spoken here is German. The German name for the German language is Deutsch (pronounced doitch). However, many people also know some English since most German students study English as a foreign language in high school. In Pirna, the town in which I teach English, you will also see many signs in Czech. Pirna is only 23 kilometers (14 miles) from the border of the Czech Republic. Many Czech people visit Pirna and some of the students at my school are actually from the Czech Republic. In my day to day life, I speak German outside of school and a mix of German and English at school (since I'm assisting in English classes)! I would like to learn some Czech too. The Czech students have already taught me dobrý deň (doe-bree den) which means hello in Czech.

What type of money is used here?:

Since Germany is a member of the European Union, they use Euros here, which is the currency of the European Union. The are 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 euro paper bills, which are made out of a similar material as U.S. dollar bills. Euros also come in 2 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 20 cent and 50 cent coins. Instead of 1 euro bills, they use 1 euro coins and there are also 2 euro coins. I have used a lot of coins to pay for small things in Germany. Most people like to pay with cash and coins rather than with a credit or debit card like we do in the U.S.
