What type of money is used here?:

We use the Romanian Leu. The most common paper money you see are one, five, ten, twenty, fifty, and one hundred lei bills. Anything under one leu is paid for using coins, which are called bani (pronounced bahn). These coins are divided into values of fifty, twenty, ten, five, and one. Here is a fun fact: bani is also the word that means "money" in Romanian!

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

It is very cheap to buy things in Romania. A normal sized bottle of water usually costs between two and four lei, which in American money equals about fifty cents to one dollar.

What was the best meal this week?:

As a vegetarian living in a country with a very meat-based cuisine, it can sometimes be hard for me to find food I like at restaurants and cafes. However, one of my favorite things to eat here is mămăliga, and the restaurant on my univerisity's campus makes it so well! Mămăliga is the same thing as polenta--it is just cooked cornmeal generally served as a side dish. But, in Romania, they also make it with the most delicious cheese or cream. I also love sarmale when I can find it made without meat. Sarmale is made by stuffing rice, spices, and meats or veggies into a cabbage roll.
