Getting Around Morocco

Introduction:

There are many ways to get around my city of Rabat and getting around Morocco is also quite easy. There are airports in all major cities, and often it is cheap to fly from one city to another. For example, getting from Marrakech to Tangier would take over four hours by car or train, but by plane, it is just an hour and a half. Trains connect all major cities in Morocco and they have been operating since before Morocco gained its independence from France. Another way to get from city to city is to take a grand taxi, which is a taxi shared by six people. Smaller taxis are available in cities, and there are also public city buses and intercity buses. Roads are well groomed in Morocco, so it is often easy to walk or bike to places. Motorcycles are becoming more and more popular as well.

How do people get around?:

In my city of Rabat, most people get around by tram, small taxis (called petit taxis) and grand taxis (shared taxis). The tram, operating for almost ten years now, is another great way to travel around Rabat. You can buy a single-ride ticket, or a long-term personalized tram card like I did. Small taxis fit one to three people, and you can often share a taxi with a stranger if you are going in the same direction. Grand taxis have specific routes and you must ask the drivers or passengers of the final destination if you are not sure.
