Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I traveled five hours to the western region of Ghana from where I stay in the capital, Accra. Well, it was supposed to be five hours, but with the traffic and potholes it turned into eight hours.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

I have travelled some great ditances to different regions of Ghana. My first stop after arriving in the country was to the northern region called Kumasi. From the capital it took about 12 hours, and that is without traffic! Than I made my way down to Cape Coast in the south which took four hours. Finally, I ventured over many unpaved roads and dirt trails to get to the western region called the Volta Region.

How did I get around this week?:

While traveling through the Volta Region I was fortunate to use a coach bus to ease the discomfort of the roads. Usually, I use taxis, my feet, or one of the many local "trotros." Trotros are vans that have specific routes that they follow. They are similar to a subway, only it's less common on a subway for someone to ask you to hold their chicken. Trotros can fit ten people comfortably, but sometimes there is upwards of 15 people in a single trotro. It is not uncommon for people to bring their groceries along, either. Yes, travelling becomes pretty cramped.
