This week I traveled about 15 miles to the city north of me to see the well-known surfing beach Reñaca. Other than that, I stayed in my local city to attend classes and learn more about the area.
Thus far, I have traveled 5,223 miles from my hometown to Chile. Other than that, I have not made any big trips away from my local city quite yet.
This week I got around by using el metro (the subway), el micro (the bus), and el colectivo (a shared taxi). I use the subway the most to get to class and to go between the two cities that I have classes in. On Friday, I used a colectivo for the first time. It is a shared taxi that takes you on a specific route to get where you're going, but it stops for others along the way. We don't have these in the U.S., so it was a new experience for me!
The most interesting place I visited this week was a place called Parque Cultural, which is a community park that used to be Valparaíso's old jail. Many prisoners were captive at the jail during a time when a dictator ruled Chile in the 1970s.
