Urban China

Fun Fact: If you look closely at some Chinese buildings, you will find that the bottom floor is a shop and all the other floors above are homes to many different families. So you may find yourself living on top of your favorite restaurant!

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

Everyone in a city is busy. Busy going to places or seeing friends and family. This means that Chinese cities like Wenzhou are full of cars that are always stuck in traffic. But luckily, Wenzhou has a wonderful metro system that allows people to get to places in a short amount of time.  If you like biking, then you’re even luckier! There are many bikes in the city that people can share and use. If you download an app, you can use any shared bike on the road! And if you don’t like biking that much, you can also choose to drive an electric bike. These vehicles look like motorcycles, but instead of needing gas to run, they use electricity. People can travel to anywhere using many different kinds of transportation.

The government has also begun a large housing project so more people can live in the city. They tear down old, shabby homes and build super tall apartments so that many families can live in the same space.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Too many people living in a city creates lots of problems. The first challenge is getting to places by car since traffic is horrible. Lots of cars and buses coming together in one city creates pollution, which is bad for people’s health.
