Because of its location, Ghana does not experience natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes, and certainly doesn't have extreme cold weather. However, Ghana experiences the effects of climate change in many other ways.

Ghana has two seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season lasts from April to June and then there's a second, shorter rainy season again from September to October. When I first arrived in Ghana, I learned from the volunteers that had already been here for a year that in 2024, Ghana experienced a tremendous drought during the rainy season. This drought made it hard for farmers to grow crops because they typically rely on the rains for their crops to grow.

Farmers will usually plan and plant their crops at the beginning of each season when they are expecting rain. However, when the rains do not come or don't last the full season, the crops will fail. This can be extremely challenging for the farmers as they don't have the resources to buy more seeds, and won't be able to harvest and sell their yields to prepare for the next season.

A way to combat this issue is to promote climate resilient farming practices and to promote other income-generating activities.
