There are three well-known otter clans in Singapore: Bishan family, Marina family, and Zouk family. These are unofficial names given by the residents. However, these families are not friendly with eachother! They actually have been seeing fighting and yelling at eachother over territory and food disputes.
Otters are excellent swimmers! They have webbed feet and powerful tails that help them move quickly through the water, where they hunt for fish, crabs and other small animals. They also use their whiskers to detect movement underwater. Otters live in family groups and communicate through squeaks, chirps and other calls to stay connected. Living together helps them protect their young and defend their territory.
Although otters have made an impressive comeback in Singapore, they still face dangers. Water pollution, habitat loss and traffic accidents can threaten their survival. As otters move into neighborhoods, they sometimes come into conflict with people, especially when they eat fish from private ponds. It's important to remember that otters are wild animals, even if they look friendly. We should never feed, touch or chase them, and should always give them plenty of space to keep both ourselves, and the otters, safe.
