What's Up With the Trash?

Introduction:

Maybe there is some trash in the tourist areas, but Amsterdam's streets are mostly very clean. As a whole, people seem to agree that clean streets and cities benefit everyone, and they work together as a society to prioritize cleanliness.

What community need did I learn about?:

My roommate and I had a conversation about waste disposal, which affects all of our lives. I've noticed that most cities throughout the Netherland are very clean, and big cities like Amsterdam have a certain cleanliness that you don't see in places like Philadelphia or New York.

Why does the community have this need?:

The Dutch do a remarkable job at waste management and keeping their cities clean, especially in their well-populated areas. My only critique is that they need to take the next step to push everyone to recycle their plastics and papers better, and to maybe start a composting option (where people can put perishable food items in a place where it will be reused).

Is this need being met? How?:

The Netherlands has a very effective social services system, and it covers everything from trash collection to the sewer system. As a society, the Dutch have been able to organize themselves for the common good. The only complaint Manon has is that the trash collectors for her local area only come every two weeks!
