It was really hard to find my way around and do everyday things, like shopping at the grocery store. Luckily, my new roommate in Kiel does speak German. She helped me learn how to count, how to ask for directions, and how to read a restaurant menu. So far, most of the German words I know are about food. I'll tell you one of my favorites: the German word for pineapple is ananas. I think it's so fun to say!
My German is getting a lot better now. I love learning new languages, and it's so cool to try and find differences between German and English. For example, did you know that Germans talk about money backwards? Instead of saying "one dollar and fifty cents", they say "fifty cents and one dollar"!
What is Kiel like?
Kiel is right next to the water. We have a fjord, which is kind of like a small river, that goes right through the middle of the city. It connects the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Not only are we surrounded by water, but also we receive a lot of rain and wind here too. In the winter, it gets dark very early in the day, but now that summer is almost here, the sun is out until almost 10:00 p.m.! Next week, I'll show you all around Kiel, so you'll get to know more about the city.
I hope that answers a few questions you may have. I can't wait to show you more of my journey and hear all about your class.
See you soon!
