Today, I wanted to share with you all a day in the life of Maria, a 63-year-old Tica (Ticos and Ticas are nicknames for native Costa Ricans), who lives in San Jose. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and is a big city full of diverse people and cultures. Life in the city is much different than in the more remote places of this country; however, Maria loves to be with her family and near the hustle and bustle of the city.
Every morning Maria wakes up early, drinks her tea and watches the birds in the garden. Even though coffee is a major export of Costa Rica and part of the Tico day, Maria never drinks it. She then makes breakfast and we sit and chat together. Today for breakfast we had her favorite, french toast served with honey. Honey is used instead of syrup in Latin America because maple trees are native to North America! We also have lots of fruit every morning, usually a mix of bananas, papaya, mango or watermelon.
After breakfast, I leave for school and Maria heads next door to her daughter Mariana's house. Every morning, Maria goes for a walk with her daughter and two-year-old grandson.
