When I traveled from my town in the south of Senegal, to the coast for vacation, it took 17 hours and I had to switch cars three times. I then traveled from the vacation area to the capital city of Dakar which took about two hours. Travel in Senegal is not streamlined or easy and requires negotiating multiple times in multiple languages as one travels through regions. Cars are cramped, hot and very old and break down often.
I prefer to walk around my town instead of riding my bike as our roads are primarily made up of sand, which makes biking difficult. However, when I go to a neighboring village, I ride my bike, usually needing to pause every once in a while to walk my bike around the sand pits that have formed.
Saly on the coast was a beautiful little respite from my small town in the south. It was fun to see the tourist area at peak tourism season as French folks like to come visit at this time of year. Restaurants were packed, the lush jungle greenery was abundant and the streets were loud with music and events.
