Ghanaians have many unique traditions! They have a long history, and there are many different ethnic groups and groups of people that live here. Each of these ethnic groups have their own histories, stories, lanugages, and traditions. These traditions can be unique to only one ethnic group or even one village. However, funerals are a tradition that everyone in Ghana takes part in. They are one of the major cultural events in the community, and there are many differences in how Ghanaians perform their funerals compared to how Americans conduct them.
I have been learning about Ghanaian funerals. Funerals are major events in Ghana, and the entire community is invited to come. Typically, the funerals will start on Friday night. Community members will stay up all night, dancing and singing to music in a tradition, called "wake keeping." On Saturday morning, the community members will go to bury the body and continue to play music. On Sunday morning, community members go to church and pay their respects during worship. On Friday and Saturday, people wear red and black while on Sunday, people will wear white and black.
Also, there will be large posters made and hung up around the community, so people will know the date and location of the funeral.
