They do not like super cold areas, like the fjord mountains in the Magallanes way down south, and they do not like the Atacama desert found in the north!
Tencas prefer to nest in cacti or shrubs with thorns, away from people and other animals that may seek to eat them or their eggs. When they are not foraging for food, they generally actively avoid people by standing in places that are high up. Whenever a threat is seen, they use alarm calls to let all the other tencas and birds know that something is wrong. Sometimes, they mimic other birds, such as hawks or eagles, to try to scare birds away.
Currently, the tenca is not a threatened species, which is great! However, there are still numerous threats to its environment which may cause them to eventually to become threatened, if we are not careful. In Chile, especially in the southern part of the country, numerous logging companies are buying a lot of land to harvest all the natural forests and habitats they live in. On top of them cutting down all the natural trees, they replant new trees that are not native to the area and are also taking away the natural canopy that tencas use to hide, nest and raise their young in.
