It is like eating French fries, but it tastes even better! At first I did not think that fried and smashed bananas would taste very good, but it was actually one of the tastiest foods I have ever eaten!
First you peel the plantain, and then you cut it up in slices. Next, you smash each piece so that is looks like a little yellow disc. You fry your smashed pieces for a few minutes, take them out of the frying pan to smash them again, return them to the frying pan and flip them on both sides until they are golden brown. Then you salt them, dip them in ketchup and buen provecho! (Enjoy the food!)
There are many matas de platano (banana trees) in the Dominican Republic. My host family has a whole garden of matas de platano right in their backyard. Whenever my host mom cooks, she picks the bananas from the tree and starts frying!
