Baila! Baila! Baila! Fería! Fería! Fería!

Introduction:

As you read this, I’ll celebrate La Fería de Abril, an annual springtime festival fair that lights the city up. This vibrant festival connects the community with Andalusian history and traditions; there is music, traditional dancing, delicious tapas, and colorful flamenco dresses.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Here's everything I know about La Fería de Abril! La Fería de Abril, or Fería, is a week-long celebration two weeks after Semana Santa (Easter), where locals and tourists dance Flamenco and wear traditional flamenco attire. They gather in the neighborhood of Los Remedios and enjoy a fairground full of private tents (casetas) where they party all day and night!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This tradition started in the 19th century. Then, farmers showcased their livestock to people in the city. Seeing how the event united the community, locals kept the tradition alive. Now, instead of stables, there are casetas where people sit, chat, dance, eat, and play.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Fería has deep connections to the environment since it initially operated as a livestock festival orchestrated by farmers. The fairground is also intentionally located with regards to the environment.
