Tervetuola Suomeen! (Welcome to Finland!)

Anthropology is the study of people in all times, places and cultures, and includes archaeology. As part of my training, I went to Ireland, and the Isle of Man to excavate an archaeological site. When archaeologists dig up a site, it is very important carefully to record everything, and to keep excellent notes. After I graduated, I spent a year working with City Year as an AmeriCorp volunteer. During that year, I worked at a K-8 school with students just like you! I then moved to Buffalo, New York to attend the University at Buffalo.

A lot of people ask why I wanted to study in Finland. To be honest, it was something of a happy accident.  One of my professors, Dr. Zubrow, and I were talking about different places where I could go to study fabric in the past, and he mentioned a friend of his in Finland who might be a good mentor. Dr. Zuborw gave me her email address, and I sent her an email. Now, five years later, I have made several short (one-month) trips to Oulu to do research. This year, I applied for and got a Fulbright-EDUFI grant, and will be living in Oulu for nine months! Since my other trips have all been very short, I have not had much time to learn Finnish or spend as much time exploring as I would have liked. With this longer stay, I am hoping to have more time in which to pursue both language learning and sightseeing in Finland.  I am looking forward to having you join me as I explore!
