Environment

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The mountainous terrain divides Taiwan into two distinct coasts (East and West). Most of Taiwan's population is on the West Coast because this region is flatter and more fertile for farming. Consequently, most industries and big cities are located on the west side. Trains and buses are also more available on the west side. Since less people live on the east side, there is less infrastructure and industry, there.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Due to the fact that Taiwan is a small island with distinct seasons, many people scooter around wearing protective gear, such as long sleeves, long pants and gloves to shield against the sun. During the rainy seasons, people can be seen wearing ponchos to protect against heavy rain. Sandals are also frequently carried around to provide a change of footwear during the rainy season. Many Taiwanese also wear face masks year round to protect against the pollution, which gets especially bad during the winter time.
