Fiestas de San Isidro

Why does the community have this tradition?:

San Isidro is celebrated in Madrid to honor their patron, San Isidro Labrador, who lived from 1080 to 1172. San Isidro Labrador was a Spanish farmworker who was known to help the poor and animals. He helped to create 100 miracles for residents of Madrid, such as finding water in a drought. So, the celebration of San Isidro revolves around the relationship between water and San Isidro. On the morning of May 15, many Spanish citizens go on a pilgrimage to the shrine of San Isidro and drink water from the spring to honor him. My favorite event of San Isidro was going to the park and dancing at a concert with all of my friends. It was really special because we got to experience an important tradition of Madrid and learn more about Madrid's interesting culture.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

The celebrations of San Isidro occur during the Spring time because that is when nature is being reborn; the flowers are blooming and the trees are covered in leaves. Madrid is shedding the cold, grey winter and replacing it with the warm, bright Spring. San Isidro Park is covered in beautiful carnation flowers. Because everyone is celebrating San Isidro, who was a farmworker, they are also celebrating the beauty of nature.
