The main language spoken here is Romanian. It is a Romance language, meaning that it belongs to the same language family as Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Many young people also speak English.
Romania uses the Romanian leu (plural lei). About 4 Romanian lei is equal to 1 US. dollar. In other words, to figure out how much something in Romanian lei costs in dollars, I divide the price by 4.
Fun fact: Leu also means "lion" in Romanian!
At a normal grocery store, a half liter bottle of water usually costs between 1 and 1.5 lei, which is equivalent to between 25 and 35 cents.
This week, I mostly cooked for myself and ate at home. Although I enjoy Romanian cuisine, which consists of lots of pork, polenta, and cheese, lately I've been missing some of my favorite American dishes. So this week, I made myself broccoli cheddar soup, which was my favorite meal from this week.
I didn't eat it this week, but my favorite Romanian dish is called sarmale, which is pork mixed with a little bit of rice, rolled inside of cabbage, that is then boiled. Sarmale is traditionally eaten with a white yogurt sauce.
