Traveler Bio

Hello! My name is Spike. “Spike” is a unique name, but it’s my real one. My dad, a wild and adventurous shipbuilder, named me after a boat. I was born in San Diego, a city in sunny California. As a kid, singing and acting kept me from feeling lost, especially when my family moved to the East Coast. Later, I went to college in Minnesota, a cold state in the middle of the United States. I studied history, music, and German. I also volunteered and worked with people in the area around my school.

After I graduated from college, I worked at a high school in Boston. As a teacher’s assistant, I helped in the classroom and helped run an after-school program. I worked with students who were new to the United States. I couldn’t remember learning English. Would my students and I be too different to understand each other?  Not at all. On the contrary, once school started, differences brought the students and me together. My students and I had so much to teach each other!

This year, I am excited to continue teaching and learning about new cultures and languages through working as a teacher’s assistant in a small city in Germany as well as through talking with your class in the United States.
