Hi, friends! I am Sofia Castillo-Trujillo, and I was born and raised in Hawthorne, Nevada. My family has lived there for almost 100 years... that’s a whole century! I’m the middle child, right between my two brothers, Alfonso and Hector. Growing up in a square mile town, I never thought I’d live in another country for a whole school year. But guess what? I’m one of the only people in my family who has ever left the United States, so this adventure is a big deal!
After graduating from high school in 2022, I moved to Reno for college at the University of Nevada, Reno. There, I study journalism and communication studies where I learn how to share stories, news and ideas in ways that help people understand each other. I chose to study journalism because I am passionate about sharing stories that are often unhear. Learning about other people and things makes us well-rounded people. Stories connect us, and I hope that by sharing mine with you, you’ll get excited about exploring new places and people, too.
College life keeps me super busy! I have worked on campus as a resident assistant and as a career mentor. I also joined clubs, like the Blue Key Honor Society, where we planned a prom for students with disabilities.
