Marzipan

Introduction:

Being raised by a German means that I was raised with a lot of German food in my house growing up. One of the sweet treats that my Omi (grandmother) always gave me was Marzipan, usually dipped in chocolate. Nothing screams "Germany" quite like this confection.

What food did I try?:

Marzipan is an almond paste that can be used in many different ways. In Germany, you can traditionally find it in the shape of a potato. It is also often dipped in chocolate, baked into a pastry or added to drinks. Bakers have gotten really advanced and can turn the Marzipan into little figurines such as animals and different fruit.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I have always really like Marzipan, but it is an acquired taste for some. Many Americans may think that it is a bit too strong. In my opinion, it tastes like roses and almonds. I prefer it with chocolate because it balances out the taste.

How is the food prepared?:

Marzipan is made of finely ground almonds, rose water, sugar and egg whites. It is then blended together and pressed into the desired shape and refrigerated. It's very easy and quick to make.

One of the best brands of Marzipan is called "Mozart Kugeln," named after the famous composer. These ones are especially good because they have a pistachio on top.
