¡Hola a todos! Hello everyone! My name is Shaleena Brooke, and I am from Edmond, Oklahoma. Edmond is a suburb right outside of Oklahoma City, in the heart of the United States. I went to school in Edmond, but I also spent a lot of time traveling around Oklahoma and Kansas to visit family in small towns or on family farms. During childhood, a good chunk of my time was dedicated to playing soccer. I’ve played soccer since I was four years old, and I still play today.
At the age of 18, I moved to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico. I earned two bachelor's degrees in Economics and International Relations, with a focus on Latin America. My studies and the people I met in college were the primary drivers of my choice to live abroad. During college, I traveled to six different countries and many places around the United States.
Right now, I live in a small town in Colombia along the Magdalena River. I work as a volunteer English teacher at a local public school through an organization called the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps is a U.S. agency that sends American citizens to other countries to help them with various needs and, most importantly, build meaningful relationships with others. I teach kids at school, but I also run community classes for adults, and help improve local English teacher trainings!
Peace Corps Volunteers like me live and work side by side with community members around the world, collaborating on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations. Learn more by clicking here.
