Nature Meets City

The animal has also been introduced to Australia and the Americas through exploration and colonization. In Hawaii, for instance, there are many wild boars living on the islands. Here in Hong Kong, the wild boar lives almost anywhere, in both urban and undeveloped areas.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Here in Hong Kong, the wild boar population has become quite large because of the animal's ability to rummage for food in urban areas. This can mean eating from garbage cans, or even the hands of a person on the street! Wild boars are resourceful and often have no natural predators in places where they are considered an invasive species (meaning they are not native to the area).

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Though wild boars are native to Hong Kong, they have no natural predators there. The biggest danger to a wild boar in Hong Kong is likely itself. Most of the boar population in this region has lost its fear of people, and thus feels safe enough to venture into homes, the streets and even businesses. It is in these locations that the boar finds itself in the most trouble: getting hit by cars, killed by fearful home owners or sick from consuming plastic and other human waste products while rummaging for food in city dumpsters. However, these situations are not threatening the existence of the wild boar population in Hong Kong at this time.
