Meet Polla

Introduction:

At the University of Mainz, you can meet so many interesting people from all over the world! I met Polla during my first week of school, and he is definitely one of the most interesting people I have ever talked to. He is also studying at the university, getting his masters in American Studies. Although Polla has lived in Germany for many years, he also has a fascinating cultural background that is very uniquely different from most Germans! He is a Kurd, which means that he is from Kurdistan, a region including parts of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

What is your full name?:

My name is Polla Garmainy.

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

I live in Worms, which is a beautiful ancient town in central Germany, not far from Mainz.

What is your family like?:

My family is wonderful. They are very warm, welcoming and protective. We are all very close to one another. That definitely has a lot to do with our culture. We are Kurds, and family as well as being part of a close-knit community play a very important role in the Kurdish culture.

How do you get around?:

I mostly get around via public transportation. It's the easiest way for me to get from point A to point B, especially here in Germany where we have such a great public transportation system. Of course, I also use my car from time to time.
