I joined an ultimate frisbee team and spent a lot of time with other international language teachers. Feeling at home in A Coruna was not quick. It took time and effort to get to know my students, teachers, teammates and friends around the city. After only a few months it truly began to feel like home. I am now a regular customer at restaurants and cafes around my house and school where I often talk with the owners or staff and I have begun to run into friends and teachers out in the city and start conversations.
I have also had the amazing opportunity to travel around Spain with my friends in the English teaching program, the culture and beauty of many places around the country. I learned so much about myself, my ability to adapt to challenges and create community in a new environment. I also learned so much about teaching, Spanish history and culture and so much more. This year may be the most impactful in the future trajectory of my life. This experience showed me that it's okay to take risks, and I am capable of doing more than I ever thought possible.
Thank you to Ms. Bureman for giving me the opportunity to share my journey with you all! I hope that you learned something about life in Spain from my blogs, and that my journey will encourage you to believe in yourself and take chances to follow something you are passionate about. I never thought that I would have the opportunity to move to Spain for nine months and teach English. I took the chance and applied. This will forever change my life. I encourage all of you to do the same. Take a leap and do what you are passionate about. Try to travel, experience new places and meet new people, whether that is in the United States or around the world.
