Fall and Winter Eats in Germany

Introduction:

Germany is especially famous for its Weinachtsmarkt or (Christmas Market) that takes place during the late fall and winter seasons. The Weinachtsmarkt is found in many major cities across the country and even in some small towns and villages. The Weinachtsmarkt features many delicious German holiday foods, beautiful Christmas decorations and other locally made goods that people often get as gifts for the holiday season. While studying in Heidelberg, I visited the city's famous Christmas market, the Heidelberger Weinachtsmarkt, in the Alstadt or old part of town. I also visited the Weinachtsmarkt in other cities such as Darmstadt.

What food did I try?:

At the Heidelberger Weinachtsmarkt, I got to try Heiss Schokolade or hot chocolate with my friends on my birthday (December 2nd). My favorite dish I tried at Heidelberg's Christmas Market was Chamignons mit trufflesauce (mushrooms with truffle sauce). I also tried Reibekuchen or German potato pancakes with garlic sauce (knoblauchsauce) at the Darmstadt Weinachsmarkt. At the Christmas Market, I also purchased Dresdner Stollen to bring back to my folks back home in the U.S. for Christmas break.
