Ramadan Festivities

Fasting is not just a matter of physical effort but rather a way to assess, reflect on and develop one's faith and spiritual health. Decorating spaces with beautiful lights is a way to acknowledge and symbolize the renewal that this blessed month may bring. Apart from the highly rewarded act of fasting itself, there are numerous spiritual benefits of increased worship, such as giving to charity and night prayer, which many Muslims do during Ramadan. Many of these traditions are encouraged community-wide because they help unify and encourage people toward a common goal that is centered upon mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. Lastly, it is no doubt that fasting can be quite challenging at times, and it is often helpful to have a comforting and tasty reward to replenish that energy after a day's worth of hard work. So many people look forward to having a dessert after breaking their fast. Furthermore, assembling qatayef asafiri requires the collective effort of a group to make the process more efficient. Thus, qatayef is enjoyed so much not only because of its taste but because it is a means to bring people together and allows them to spend quality time.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

The traditions during Ramadan are reflective of the predominant Islamic environment and culture in Jordan. The crescent moon that often appears in decorations around the country is a reference to the waxing crescent that signifies the start of a new month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Giving charity and making food for others is a way of looking after the wellbeing of those in one's communtiy.
