Securing a Sustainable Ocean Economy, with Erna Solberg

  • My Fulbright experience continues to show me how much I can learn from others who differ from me. We have so much to learn, and some of the best teachers are already among us, waiting to gain an equitable voice. Focusing on only our own experiences stifles us, and we must take the time to consider, say, a small island’s way of handling a crisis and see how it can inform our actions. I am learning never to doubt that someone with a different viewpoint could make me change my mind. What are your thoughts about what I heard on Monday? We must all work together, especially in protecting the Earth’s oceans, most of which are not under national jurisdiction and ‘belong’ to no one. There is only one Earth, after all. 

    Glossary of terms:

    • Equity: Different from equality. Instead of everyone getting the same, everyone gets what they need. It acknowledges that we all begin life in different places. 
    • Subsistence Fishing: Generally refers to small-scale fishing with non-modern, traditional gear.
