My name is Cody Bahlau, and in just a few days, I’ll be setting off on a journey I’m calling Pedal to Port. Before I start riding, I thought I should introduce myself and show you some of the work that goes into getting ready for an adventure like this.
I grew up in southern Michigan and graduated from Columbia Central High School. I started at Jackson Community College before transferring to the University of Michigan, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Geology. Years later, I earned a Graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, from the University of Colorado Denver.
One thing I’ve learned is that education never really stops. There is always something new to learn.
Today, I live in Colorado near the Rocky Mountains, but my work takes me all over the world. I work aboard the R/V Marcus G. Langseth, a scientific research ship operated by Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. As a Chief Science Officer, I help turn scientists’ research goals into safe and successful operations at sea. I help plan our work, manage science operations and technical teams, oversee data collection, and solve problems when conditions or plans change.
