What main languages are spoken here?:

Serbian is undoubtedly the most common language spoken here. However, technically speaking, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin are also distinct languages, despite being mutually intelligible with Serbian. Their classification as separate languages is largely tied to the efforts of these former Yugoslavian nations to assert their individual national identities. Therefore, you may also encounter local speakers of these languages in Kragujevac.

Since Kragujevac is located in the heart of central Serbia, Serbian is by far the most prevalent language. However, older generations often know Russian, while a large proportion of younger generations speak English. Some speak English so well that they have little to no discernible accent, and could even be mistaken for native speakers. Their vocabulary is often remarkably advanced and rivals that of many native English speakers. There is also a community of Russian immigrants, as well as a surprisingly small, but consistent, population of Moroccans and Indians, some of whom speak Arabic and Hindi, respectively.

People here are generally happy to speak English with me, as I am still in the very early stages of learning Serbian. They have been incredibly patient, kind and helpful.
