I thought it was really interesting, and my teacher told me it has a flavor that is unique to the Bohemian region (which includes part of the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary). I really like poppyseeds, so I liked the flavor, and I also love potatoes, so I thought the dish was tasty. The food didn't have a strong flavor, but it was very filling.
Mohnnudel is made by boiling and mashing potatoes before shaping them into oval "noodles." Sometimes, they are pan-fried afterward. They are then sprinkled with ground poppyseeds and powdered sugar before being topped with melted butter. Two of my roommates and I tried to make this dish for our Czech food class, but we accidentally bought the wrong type of potatoes, so the noodles didn't hold their shape. Luckily, we learned our lesson for next time!
The Spanish brought potatoes from South America to Europe soon after Columbus landed in the Americas in the late 1400s. They became an important Czech crop and are now a big part of many Czech and other Slavic foods! ("Slavic" describes people from Eastern and Central Europe who have similar languages and cultures.)
In addition, the Czech Republic is the biggest producer of poppyseeds in the world. The country produced around 30,000 tons of them in 2024! Since the region is really good for growing poppyseeds, a lot of traditional Czech dishes include them.
