Ciao a tutti (Hello everyone)! My name is Olivya Rivera, and I am a 21 year old economics and finance major pursuing my business studies in Milan. I grew up in a small town called Chelsea, Massachusetts, which is just outside of Boston. Life there tends to be fast paced and always on the move. Due to that, I have always been intersted in how people live outside of the United States, specifically what people have called the "European lifestyle". Now I have the chance to experience it first hand!
Life in Milan has completely reshaped my perspective on daily life. Here, people appreciate a slower pace and taking their time--whether its walking around the city on a beautiful day or chatting for hours with friends over a meal. There is a strong emphasis on taking your time, community and connection. Some shops even close midday just so employees have a break! It's such a refreshing thing to experience, and I have been so happy to immerse myself in the Italian/Euro culture.
As a part of this experience I have also begun to learn Italian. I am actively making the effort to practice in everyday situations, whether it be at cafes, restaurants, or local shops. While I am not fluent whatsoever and continue to develop my skills, I have found the locals to be welcoming and accepting. These small interactions have become some of the most meaningful parts of my journey so far. Milan's diversity has also played an immense role in my growth. As a student, I value learning anything, and I have been able to connect and learn from not only Italians but other foreigners from around the world!
During my time abroad, I will have the opportunity to attend a student tour at the World Food Programme, a United Nations organization based in Rome that aims to fight worldwide hunger. This experience is especially important to me as someone who wants to work internationally and understand the nuances of global issues and life. My journey in Italy so far has taught me so much; about myself and the world! I am excited to continue this adventure and bring all of you along with me!
