Citzens were invited to watch outside the gates at Theresienwiese (Therese's Meadow). The people enjoyed food, horse races, music and more. It soon turned into an annual event due to its popularity.
Germany is known for its keenness on being environmentally friendly even for the massive festival. Oktoberfest has been pushed to be eco-friendly and sustainable for the past few decades. Disposable plates and culture were banned in 1991 inside the event. Food and drinks are served with glass dishes so they can be reused. The event team also uses mostly renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. The event is also heavily focused on public transport and provides a lot of bike parking to reduce car emissions.
