A German Mushroom Adventure

Introduction:

Since arriving in Germany, I have been discovering that food is an important part of everyday life and culture. Even though I have only been here a short time, I have already experienced food in some unique ways. From exploring the forest and learning how to identify wild mushrooms, to shopping at a local market and trying their seasonal baked goods, to stopping frequently at a local cafe for some coffee or pastries. I am beginning to see how food connects people to their surroundings and traditions. I am excited to share some of these experiences and what they have taught me about Germany thus far.

What food did I try?:

One of the most interesting foods I have tried this fall is Zwiebelkuchen, or German onion cake. Despite its name, it isn't a sweet cake as you might think. It's a savory dish that is made with onions, eggs, cream, and often bacon, baked on a doughy crust. Zwiebelkuchen is especially popular in the fall and is a traditional dish in the wine-growing regions of Germany. I have also tried Weisswurst, or white sausage, along with other German sausages. So far, I have learned that sausages are an important part of their culture, and depending on what region you are in, you can get specific kinds of sausage. There are bakeries everywhere! I have tried different kinds of pretzels, bread rolls, and pastries.
