A Korean Boarding School Student's Story: Meet Jiwon

Introduction:

I met Jiwon when her school visited the Border Peace School in Cheorwon to learn about the DMZ. She's a sophomore at a boarding school, which means she lives there Sunday through Friday and only goes home on weekends.

Jiwon's routine is pretty different from that of most American high schoolers. She eats all her meals in the cafeteria—where everyone calls the nutritionist "mom"—studies a packed schedule of classes, and still makes time for what she really loves: music and art. She wants to be a singer someday.

Jiwon answered my questions about Korean school life, but she had plenty of her own questions about what school is like in America. You'll find her original Korean responses underneath the English translations.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

At our school, we eat all our meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner - in the cafeteria! We affectionately call our school nutritionist "mom," and the moms always serve us delicious food, so all the students are happy!
