Italian Traditions

Introduction:

During my journey to Italy, I experienced cultural traditions that were both surprising and meaningful. From the way people eat to how they celebrate achievements, these customs reflect Italy’s strong sense of history and pride in tradition.

What tradition did I learn about?:

One tradition I noticed is that pizza is not cut for you. You are expected to eat it whole using a knife and fork or fold it yourself. Meals are also much longer and more social, often lasting hours. Another tradition is that graduating students wear flower crowns, called laurels, and celebrate in the streets with friends and family. People also enjoy a daily passeggiata, or evening walk, where they get together and socialize.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

These traditions exist because Italians value connection and celebration. Not cutting pizza keeps it authentic and fresh. Long meals allow people to bond and enjoy each other’s company. Flower crowns have ancient Roman roots that reflect honor and achievement, while celebrations highlight the importance of education and milestones. The passeggiata encourages community interaction and relaxation.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Yes, these traditions are closely tied to Italy’s environment and lifestyle. Fresh and local ingredients influence how food is prepared and served.
