Garifuna Settlement Day In Belize

Introduction:

Have you ever had to move somewhere new? The Garifuna people had to do that a long time ago. Some mean people made them leave their home. But the Garifuna did not give up! They sailed to Belize and brought their songs, food and dances with them. Now every November 19th, we celebrate how strong they were!

What tradition did I learn about?:

Living in Belize, I have been lucky enough to learn about many amazing celebrations and traditions. One of the most special is Garifuna Settlement Day. The Garifuna people are full of pride for their culture, and it shows in the way they celebrate. From drumming and dancing, to delicious food and canoe reenactments, this holiday is truly one of a kind.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The Garifuna people celebrate this day to remember their ancestors, who were forced to leave their home and sailed all the way to Belize to start a new life. The holiday was started by a man named Thomas Vincent Ramos back in 1941, and in 1977 it became an official national holiday for the whole country. He wanted to make sure the Garifuna story was never forgotten.

Garifuna Settlement Day is a way for the whole community to come together and feel proud of who they are. The music, dancing and food are not just for fun, they are ways of keeping the Garifuna language, traditions and history alive.
