Grey Herons in the Yvette River Basin

Introduction:

Grey herons like to live in wetlands. They have long legs and necks, and they mostly eat fish, frogs and insects. They can stand nearly three feet tall, but they only weigh about four pounds. Birds have to be light in order to fly! Grey herons can be found in almost all of Europe, Asia and even northern Africa!

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Grey herons are grey, as you might have guessed from their name. They are tall and slender, with a black stripe on their head and a yellow beak. They have very long legs and big wings! Baby grey herons are grey all over, and they don't get yellow beaks until they're grown up.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I'm always really excited when I get to see a heron. They are very beautiful, and quite big, so sometimes seeing one is a bit of a surprise. There's one that lives quite near my apartment, and if I'm lucky I get to see it fishing when I go for my runs. It's really cool to see herons fly overhead, too, and their long necks and big wings make it easy to recognize them from a long way away!

Where does it live?:

One of the coolest things about grey herons is that they can live in so many different places!
