Grey Herons in the Yvette River Basin

They like to live in swamps and wetlands, and they can be found all over Eurasia and Africa in places where there's enough water for them to find the things they like to eat. Fun fact: the Ancient Egyptians believed in a god called Bennu who was depicted as a grey heron!

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Grey herons like to live in water, but only when it's shallow enough to wade in and doesn't have a strong current. They wade through the water to find and catch the frogs, crabs, fish and water insects they like to eat. They prefer shallow and murky water, since it makes it easier for them to spot their prey before it can get away! Their long legs are perfectly designed for wading, and their long beaks help them spear fish and other prey.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Loss of wetland habitats can make it harder for grey herons to survive. They might not be able to find food or places to live. For a long time, the Yvette River was channelized, which means humans changed its course and filled in its natural flood basins and wetlands. Right now, my community is working on rebuilding these wetlands so that the Yvette River can flow naturally again and provide restored habitat for grey herons and lots of other birds! Wetlands are super important natural habitats, becuase they have some of the most biodiversity in the world! Biodiversity means that there are lots of different species of plants and animals living together, and it's a sign that an ecosystem is healthy and thriving.
