Semana Santa begins on Palm Sunday in late March and lasts until Easter Sunday in early April. During this time, many Spaniards visit family and friends and participate in religious activities. There are elaborate street processions with detailed wooden and metal floats and music performances that represent emotional passages in the story of Christ. These floats are typically dedicated to the Virgin Mary or important saints and are often carved or crafted by locals in the months leading up to Semana Santa. People who do not celebrate the religious part of Holy Week still have time off from work and school. I will be visiting Morroco and two cities in Spain with my mom. During Easter we will travel to Toledo, Spain, to participate in Semana Santa.
I learned about the tradition of Semana Santa, or Holy Week, that is observed in Spain in March and April every year. This tradition involves religion, travel, food, and time spent with loved ones! In Madrid, people will participate in street processions with statues and images of religious figures, adorned with flowers, candles, and embroidered fabric.
