There are so many ways to get around in Taiwan. But in large, rural Pingtung County, the best way to get around is by motor scooter. The Fulbright-ers here are all taught and expected to ride scooters. Having my own scooter is one of my favorite parts of living in Taiwan, and has helped me to feel so much more independent while living abroad.
I love how many options there are for transportation in Taiwan. A lot of people drive cars, but there is also a great train system. Every county has a local train, and larger cities like Kaohsiung and Taipei have an MRT (subway) system. There is also the High Speed Rail (HSR), which connects the cities on the West Coast at 186 miles per hour -- it can get you from the southern end of the country to the northern end in just two hours! There are also public bikes, called YouBikes, which are very easy to rent using the same transit card used for the trains. By far, the most common way to get around is by motor scooter. In fact, Taiwan has the highest density of scooters in the world, which means it has the most for its population! For every 100 people in Taiwan, there are about 60 scooters. That's a lot of scooters!
