Hungarians are very proud of their food and love sharing it with others. My Hungarian coworkers at my host university are always sharing recommendations of dishes to try and markets to visit that have the best fruits and vegetables. Some traditional Hungarian dishes include gulyás (beef stew), lángos (fried dough with toppings), and lecsó (stew with onions, tomatoes, and peppers). Needless to say, Hungarians love warm soups and stews, especially during the colder winter months. But sweet desserts like kürtőskalács (chimneycake), a cinnamon cake sometimes filled with ice cream, and chocolate sponge cakes made with layers of marzipan, can be found in lots of Hungarian restaurants as well. Hungarians also love coffee. In Eger, where I am living, there is a small coffee shop called “Central Park” based on the “Central Perk” cafe from the TV show Friends. I’ve been enjoying discovering new foods to try while living in Hungary so far!
I tried a Hungarian dish called csirkepaprikás (chicken paprikash) with some students from my host university during a Hungarian cooking night event. Chicken paprikash is a chicken dish served in a paprika sauce over egg noodles or nokedli (small dumplings). It is a traditional Hungarian dish that is still very popular today.
