When a person thinks about South Korea, many cultural images may spring to mind. Some of these images may matter to South Koreans less than you'd imagine. Consider music, for example. The truth is most people here don't listen to K-Pop. I've talked to so many Korean people who have told me their favorite artists are Justin Bieber or Chris Brown. It turns out that in Korea, just like in America, some people are really into pop and boy bands and some people hate that stuff. That being said, Koreans are very proud of BTS' accomplishments, especially making Korea more well-known around the world.
The general consensus, here, is that karaoke is the top tier of community fun! And I agree. It seems like there are as many karaoke parlors here as there are Starbucks in America. There is always karaoke nearby, here in Seoul, and it is always cheap--approximately $6 USD for one hour. My friends and I rountinely squeeze into the coin karaoke place down the street from our dorm to scream out our favorite songs. And there is, fortunately, a LARGE selection of American songs to choose from!
As a student, you can always tell when it's getting close to exams, because there are more poeple studying in cafes. Cafe culture here is huge!
