Hi explorers! This is Tim, and I am writing to you from my home in Chicago. As I return to my regular routine, it is hard to believe that I was in the Antarctic just a few weeks ago. Sometimes it feels to me like the whole expedition was a dream! I have been looking through the thousands of photos I took, remembering the stories behind them and trying to arrange them in an order that helps me share the real story of this incredible experience with you all during school visits and future livestream events. The more I reflect on the past few months, the more I realize how special this journey was.
After we found Endurance, we left the Weddell Sea and made our way back to Cape Town with a quick stop at South Georgia Island to visit Sir Ernest Shackleton’s gravesite. After weeks of around-the-clock work–and with all of the precious images and mapping data of Shackleton’s Endurance collected–the entire expedition team was able to relax a bit and process the results of our hard work. We sat together in the ship’s lounges at night, playing games, telling stories, sharing photos and laughing.
